Design-Build in Action: Crafting a Vision for a Previously Undefined Workspace

The Barbara Lane Residence project exemplifies ZoDen Engineers’ strength in delivering highly customized design-build solutions, even in the absence of a clear client vision. Located in Fairfax, VA, the project began as a simple refresh of select areas within the home. After seeing the quality and impact of the initial renovations, the homeowner, referred initially by a trusted previous client, was so inspired by the results that they decided to move forward with modernizing and organizing an underperforming home office space.

The office lacked functionality, clear direction, and design cohesion. Although the client had long wanted to improve the space, they were unsure how to begin. That’s where ZoDen Engineers stepped in, transforming uncertainty into a thoughtful, tailored solution.

Building Vision from the Ground Up

With no certain initial concept or guiding vision, the ZoDen Engineers team engaged in an iterative design process, working closely with the client to discover their preferences, needs, and work habits. This ongoing dialogue enabled us to craft a tailored solution, one that catered to the client’s personality and practical needs.

Utilizing our integrated design-build methodology, we oversaw every aspect of the project, from concept through construction. The scope included:

  • Custom cabinetry and built-in bookshelf design
  • Electrical layout and lighting design upgrades
  • Material selections, finishes, and painting
  • Drywall repairs and precise installation of millwork

At the heart of the design was a thoughtfully crafted custom shelving system, developed to maximize functionality while elevating the room’s visual appeal. As part of the same design vision, a statement panel board was created to complement the shelving and serve as a striking feature on the back wall. Though not installed during construction, the panel board remains a fully developed design feature, ready for future implementation.

Directional lighting was added to highlight the bookshelves, creating both a practical workspace and a warm, inviting atmosphere. These design elements were visually impactful and strategically planned to emphasize organization and functionality.

Tailored Detailing and Precision Execution

Our design-build team collaborated closely with trusted fabricators to ensure that every detail aligned with the original design intent. The cabinetry and shelving were custom-built to fit the space precisely. Electrical upgrades supported additional lighting zones and smart features, while carefully selected finishes added sophistication and warmth, elevating the room into a professional yet comfortable environment.
